Gold-Filled vs. Gold-Plated Jewelry: What's the Difference and Why It Matters

What Makes Gold-Filled Jewelry Different?

If you've ever shopped for gold jewelry online, you've probably seen the terms "gold-filled," "gold-plated," and "solid gold" — and wondered what actually separates them. The differences are significant, especially when it comes to how long your jewelry lasts, how it looks over time, and whether it's safe for sensitive skin.

At Vyolett, every piece in our collection is crafted with genuine gold-filled material — not gold-plated. Here's why that matters.

Gold-Filled vs. Gold-Plated: The Key Differences

Gold-filled and gold-plated jewelry may look similar at first glance, but they're made very differently — and those differences show up over time.

Gold-filled jewelry is made by mechanically bonding a thick layer of real gold to a base metal core using heat and pressure. By U.S. law, the gold layer must make up at least 5% of the item's total weight. That means gold-filled pieces contain roughly 100 times more gold than gold-plated jewelry.

Gold-plated jewelry is made through electroplating — a chemical process that deposits a very thin layer of gold (less than 0.05% of the item's weight) onto a base metal. This thin coating is prone to wearing off within weeks or months, especially with regular wear.

Why Gold-Filled Is the Smart Choice

Gold-filled jewelry hits the sweet spot between quality and affordability:

  • Built to last. With proper care, gold-filled pieces maintain their color and shine for 10 to 30 years — or longer.
  • Safe for sensitive skin. The substantial gold layer is hypoallergenic — no irritation or green marks.
  • Looks like solid gold. Same warmth, same luster, same luxury feel — at a fraction of the price.
  • Low maintenance. A simple wipe with a soft cloth keeps it looking new.

How to Spot the Difference When Shopping

  • Check the markings. Gold-filled jewelry is stamped "GF" or "1/20 14K GF." Gold-plated says "GP," "GEP," or "HGE."
  • Consider the price. If it looks like gold but costs very little, it's likely plated.
  • Read the description. Reputable sellers clearly state whether jewelry is gold-filled or gold-plated.
